February 15, 2011 Photonic Crystal Enhanced Fluorescence Featured on Cover of Analytical Chemistry Journal

A paper entitled "Application of Photonic Crystal Enhanced Fluorescence to Cancer Biomarker Microarrays," by Cheng-Sheng Huang, Sherine George, Meng Lu, Vikram Chaudhery, and Brian Cunningham from the University of Illinois and Ruimin Tan and Richard Zangar from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) was published in the February 15, 2001 issue of Analytical Chemistry journal and featured on the cover.

The project is an NIH-funded and NSF-funded collaboration between the Nano Sensors Group at Illinois and the group of Dr. Richard Zangar at PNNL. The paper describes the first use of Photonic Crystal Enhanced Fluorescence (PCEF) to amplify the fluorescent output of a protein microarray for detection of biomarker proteins related to breast cancer. The paper shows simultaneous detection of 24 cancer biomarkers, and a reduction in detection limits as a result of using the photonic crystal surface.
