Research Interests

My current research focus in porous material based photonic crystal biosensors (design, fabrication and characterization), optical sensing platform that can be integrated in a smartphone, and novel optical phenomena associated with different optical sensor structures.

I have been extensively involved in research covering various aspects of the optical-surface-wave-based detection and sensing systems, label-free, as well as fluorescence- and raman-based, techniques targeting biomedical applications.

Other interests include nanofabrication, optical imaging and point-of- care-testing aimed sensing technologies.

  • Investigation and experimental demonstration of novel optical sensing techniques.
  • Theoretical study and experimental demonstration of optical phenomena associated with different optical sensor structures.
  • Theoretical modelling, design and simulation of plasmonic structures and photonic crystal structures using FEM (Comsol), and FDTD.
  • Development of automated optical sensing systems including their optics, mechanical and some electrical designs, as well as the control software. Had led a group of graduate students to build an SPRi demo instrument and the associated microfluidic control module.
